Who We Are

Hope in the Face of AIDS Flyer

The global HIV/AIDS epidemic is one of catastrophic proportions - 25 million deaths around the world, 33.2 million people currently infected with the virus, and 15 million children orphaned. Every day, there are 14,000 new infections worldwide. This disease is decimating the world's poor, and yet, for many Americans, the AIDS epidemic is just a grave plight on a distant continent.

Several years ago, a group of globally engaged students committed to the fight against HIV/AIDS created an organization to limit the impact of the disease in one area of the world most heavily afflicted - India. The International Alliance for the Prevention of AIDS (IAPA) provides community based HIV education services, HIV positive support and advocacy services, capacity building services for community based organizations, and health development programs in Chennai, India. By working together with local communities, we strive to provide hope - hope that new infections can be averted, hope that the lives of those already infected can be extended, hope that individuals already infected will not face stigma, and hope that one day HIV will no longer decimate families and communities.

To this end, we are having our 4th annual fundraising event to be held April 24, 2010 at the Scottsdale Hilton Resort & Villas. Inspired by the hope that has been brought to communities who previously had no reason for hope, the theme for this event is "Hope in the Face of AIDS." This business-formal fundraiser event will include live music and dance performances, an auction, and the presenting of the Face of Hope award to Dr Andy Myers. Donations are tax deductible and monies raised will be used to increase the education, support and advocacy, health development, and capacity building services IAPA provides to the underserved in south India. Together, we can mobilize and inspire people to fight HIV/AIDS locally and globally. Together, we can deliver services where services are most desperately needed. Together, we will provide hope to communities facing AIDS.

Face of Hope Award

Arizona Grand Resort

In honor of his years of dedicated service to HIV treatment and research, Dr. Andy Myers will be presented with the Face of Hope Award.. This award is meant to recognize Dr. Myers for his service to HIV positive patients in Arizona and his clinical trials research for HIV medications which has made a global impact on treatment options. Just as IAPA strives to provide hope to those affected and at risk of infection by HIV in south India, Dr. Myers has spent his medical career providing hope to people around the globe through his work .

When Doctor Andy Myers began his private practice in the early 1980’s, fear, confusion and prejudice reigned as a disease, eventually known as AIDS, grew from a mystery to an epidemic.  Despite the fact that many doctors were unwilling to care for AIDS patients, Dr. Myers saw this as a challenge and an opportunity to care for those suffering from a disease about which little was known and whose outcomes were poor.   Since that time, Dr. Myers has tirelessly dedicated himself to the treatment of HIV/AIDS patients.

Of Dr. Myers work with his patients, Jennifer Wullkotte, the Maricopa Medical Center (MMC)  HIV team social worker observes, “Dr. Myers has spent his career treating the most vulnerable patients of our community including those with HIV/AIDS.   He serves them all with dignity, compassion, empathy, and caring unsurpassed by anyone I have witnessed before.  I am privileged to work with him and learn from him.”

Dr. Myers began his Residency at Maricopa Medical Center in 1975.  After an Oncology Fellowship at the University of Vermont, Dr. Myers returned to MMC where he was a staff physician until 1984.   After spending the next 10 years in private practice, Dr. Myers returned, with the support of MMC Administrator Tony Rogers, to MIHS and Body Positive (now known as Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS) to become Director of Inpatient HIV Services for Maricopa Integrated Health Systems and to start an HIV clinical trials program located at Body Positive.  Through his tireless work and dedication, Dr. Myers has been able to provide hospital care to patients with HIV and train residents about the disease.   The clinical trials program has provided the community with access to investigational HIV treatments through clinical studies that have helped get these medications approved by the FDA and available commercially.

While no vaccine has been found that prevents HIV infection, Dr. Myers, with other researchers and study volunteers from across the nation, forged ahead in evaluating two candidate vaccines developed to prevent people from becoming infected with HIV.  Unfortunately, neither was effective but much was learned in the process.  In the mid 90’s Dr. Myers and Body Positive participated in  clinical trials that, for the first time, demonstrated that HIV could be effectively treated with combinations of antiretroviral drugs rather than the single drug regimes that had been used and clearly didn’t work.

Today, Dr. Myers continues to provide hospital care to HIV-infected patients and to train medical residents in HIV medicine.
